SPF Foam Roofing Insulates The Ideal Location
A Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) roof puts the insulation in the ideal location, at the building’s exterior. Hot rays of sun are deflected before they have a chance to be absorbed by the roof structure, and cold winter air does not have a chance to cool the underlying roof structure and attic spaces. By insulating the exterior roof surface with a Dura-Foam Roofing System, the roof structure is maintained at indoor temperature improving energy efficiency. Highest R-Value
Rigid polyurethane foam has the highest insulation R-Value of all insulation materials. Based on an R-value of 6.25, polyurethane foam is more than twice as effective as fiberglass, cellulose, and other common types of insulation. However, the R-value test does not take into account some very significant energy loss factors. First, air infiltration is not taken into consideration in the R-value test. In real-world environments, porous insulations such as fiberglass and cellulose are always subject to moisture and infiltration. Second, porous insulation materials absorb moisture. Introducing moisture into insulation is like trying to stay warm while wearing a damp jacket. Third, wall and roof cavities containing porous insulation are subject to the stack effect where air tends to rise vertically through the wall reducing efficiency. Finally, the R-value test does not take into account seams in insulation. Seams between panels of rigid foam board or insulation bats also result in significant energy losses.
Several characteristics of spray polyurethane foam work together to overcome these losses. First, polyurethane foam is closed cell and does not allow air or moisture to penetrate. Since air does not travel through spray foam insulation, stack effect is also eliminated. Second, spray applied foam completely seals wall and roof surfaces to eliminate air infiltration. Finally, spray applied foam forms a monolithic barrier with no seams. Even before we took these perks into consideration, spray foam already had twice the R-value of fiberglass and cellulose.
